Our Mission

The Louisville Coalition for Black Maternal Health serves to:

  • Raise awareness and promote health equity in Louisville.
  • Center the voices of Black Mamas, women, birthing people, and families.
  • Enhance community organizing on Black maternal health.
  • Be a platform to ignite change and improve outcomes for Black Mamas and birthing people in our community.

WE ARE BECAUSE YOU ARE

 We believe,

· Empathy, compassion, and solidarity are important. We should support and uplift one another, recognizing that our destinies are intertwined.

We believe,

· The well-being of mothers impacts the entire community

We believe,

· Collective responsibility and support systems are needed for mothers to receive the care they deserve.

We believe,

· Communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers should work together to create equitable health systems and advocate for policies that improve outcomes for Black mothers.

We believe,

· By listening to and empowering Black mothers to share their stories and needs, healthcare systems can be more responsive and effective in providing culturally competent care.

We believe,

·  Healthcare systems and providers must build genuine, respectful relationships with Black mothers, acknowledging their humanity and dignity.

We believe,

·   Factors such as housing, education, and economic stability must be addressed to improve overall health outcomes for the Black birthing community.

This statement is adapted from the African proverb "I am because we are.” The statement embodies the profound African philosophy of Ubuntu, emphasizing that individual well-being and identity are intertwined with the community. It emphasizes the mutual impact of actions and well-being and encourages a shared responsibility for collective well-being.
